The High Street School is a contributing structure to the Gettysburg Battlefield National Register Historic District. It is nationally significant because of its association with the Battle of Gettysburg and its design by an eminent Victorian architect. Completed in 1858, it was designed by the prominent Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan. Its distinctive Italianate exterior and unique interior floor plan is virtually identical to that illustrated in Sloan's book The Model Architect ( 1852 ), and may be the only intact Sloan building remaining in Pennsylvania. During the Battle of Gettysburg, classes were suspended and the building housed more than 200 Union and Confederate wounded from July 1 - August 7, 1863 Numerous accounts survive describing the medical activities in the building. In 2000 the High Street School was officially recognized by the Gettysburg National Military Park and Gettysburg Borough as one of the town's most important historic structures and specifically featured in the "Gettysburg Interpretive Plan". |
