On the 16th day of August, 1966, it was decided by the Board of Commissioners of Adams County, Pennsylvania, that there was a need for a Housing Authority. This housing authority would function within the territorial lines of the county, and would provide housing to low-income families. On September 27, 1966, the ADAMS COUNTY HOUSING AUTHORITY was established. Since the inception of the Housing Authority, it has consistently accomplished many of the goals towards fulfilling its mission statement. Highlights of the past year include:

~ The move to 40 East High Street. The new facility has additional parking and is conveniently located in historic downtown Gettysburg and has room for a learning center.

~ACHA was awarded $9,000 from Housing for Urban Development (HUD) for establishing the Housing Choice Voucher Home ownership Program and for successfully helping four families move into home ownership. Since the award, an additional two families have gone from renters to homeowners using this program.

~ACHA was awarded $210,000 in HOME funds for down payment and closing cost assistance. Most of the funds are used at the Authority's fourteen three-bedroom townhouse community, named Chapel Field. Located in Gettysburg, the community is mixed-income.

~The Supportive Housing Program has served eighteen families (seventy-seven individuals) in the past year; six families of which have moved to permanent housing.

~With HUD approval, ACHA will expand its project-based voucher program by assisting an additional forty-nine families with subsidies in 2005.
